Drift Eliminators

Cooling Tower Products:
Drift Eliminators

Drift eliminators are an essential component in cooling towers. They prevent circulating water entrained in the exhaust airstream from exiting the cooling tower. This is important because the circulating water contains all the chemicals in the cooling system loop. Deposition of these chemicals on the area surrounding the cooling tower can have several negative effects. Corrosion, unsightly deposits, and potential spread of legionella bacteria are potential problems from uncontrolled drift.

As an additional component in the airstream, drift eliminators add pressure drop to the air flow through the tower. It is important to understand the pros and cons of different types of different types of drift eliminators. Our decades of experience can help you make informed choices for your application.

Cellular Drift Eliminators

Cellular drift eliminators provide the best capture of drift droplets since their closed-cell designs yield more surface area for droplet impingement and filming vs blade drift eliminators. Cellular drift eliminators also provide for greater flexibility during installation because they can be easily trimmed around tower structures and made to fit as needed. With their high performance and ease of use, cellular DEs are the work horses in the industry and are the state of the art in drift removal.

We offer multiple styles of cellular drift eliminators for both counterflow (CF) and crossflow (XF) applications.

CFUltra

The CFUltra is the highest performing drift eliminator in the industry, with a drift rating 20-50% better than any other product on the market. It has been independently tested and third-party verified, offering ground-breaking drift reduction – without increasing pressure drop – over the industry-standard CF80MAx. With a drift loss of 0.0004% down to 0.00025% and its beveled drainage tips to reduce operating pressure drop, CFUltra is THE state of the art in counterflow drift elimination and is a perfect drop-in upgrade for existing installations.

CF80MAx

The CF80MAx is designed to maximize drift removal efficiency. It features beveled drainage tips to reduce pressure drop by up to 25% and a nested seam design to reduce bypass. With drift loss of 0.0005%, CF80MAx eliminates the need for use of double layers to achieve drift reduction.

CF150MAx

For applications where extremely low drift ratings are not required, CF150MAx provides a lower cost yet very effective solution with a drift loss of 0.001%. It features a nesting design and is often used in field erected towers.

XF80MAx

The XF80Max provides the highest efficiency of any crossflow drift eliminator on the market, with a drift loss of 0.0005%. It features an upward airflow path that drains collected water back toward the fill, and its tuned venturi section increases the air velocity to capture smaller droplets.

XF150MAx

For applications where extremely low drift ratings are not required, XF150MAx provides a lower cost yet very effective solution with a drift loss of 0.001%. It features a nesting design and an upward airflow path to drain collected water back toward the fill. It is used in both field erected and factory assembled towers.

D15

D15 drift eliminators are a proven product with over 40 years of history behind them. They are suitable for crossflow or counterflow applications that require moderate drift levels. Their low pressure drop helps to lower fan power requirements. They offer a drift loss of 0.003% and are made from corrugated, UV-protected PVC sheets that are solvent bonded to provide nominal 12-inch- or 24-inch-wide packs in lengths up to 10 feet. Pack stiffness can be varied with the addition of different numbers of flat, 30mil stiffener sheets that are bonded to the corrugated sheets.

Blade Drift Eliminators

Blade drift eliminators are a proven drift eliminator design with over 50 years of use in cooling towers. Due to the greater thicknesses of their constituent components, blade drift eliminators offer great durability and longer span capabilities than cellular drift eliminators.

Blade drift eliminators are typically produced in two common designs: one involves extruded blades, which may feature heavy gauge or double-walled designs, with separate spacers assembling the blades into packs/modules; the other design utilizes heavy gauge thermoformed parts, incorporating thermoformed end caps to assemble the blades into individual packs/modules.

Blade Drift Eliminator Benefits

  • Available in material meeting Cooling Technology Institute (CTI) Standard 136
  • Designed for counterflow & crossflow applications

DE080

DE080 Blade Drift Eliminator modules use a tightly spaced series of sinusoidal-shaped thermoformed PVC blades that force the air to make three distinct changes of direction and offer a 6ft span capability in a counterflow application. This yields very efficient drift droplet removal with a drift rate of 0.002%. This performance does not come at the expense of fan energy because the DE080 offers one of the lowest pressure drops of all our available drift eliminators.

DE097

DE097 Blade Drift Eliminator modules are specifically designed for use in forced draft counterflow cooling towers. Like DE080 and DE0120 drift eliminators, the DE097 utilizes a series of sinusoidal-shaped thermoformed blades to achieve drift droplet removal by forcing the air to make three distinct changes of direction. What makes the DE097 unique for forced draft towers is the directional discharge design of the blades. When installed properly, the warm moisture-laden exhaust air is directed away from the cooling tower intake fans so that the tower’s performance isn’t degraded due to recirculation.

DE120

DE120 Blade Drift Eliminator modules use a series of sinusoidal-shaped thermoformed blades to achieve drift removal by forcing the air to make three distinct changes of direction. The 1.2-inch blade spacing allows for moderate performance with a low cost, making the DE120 our most affordable drift eliminator.

Metallic Drift

For special applications where extreme temperatures or flammability concerns restrict the use of polymer materials. The blade design of these products enables efficient drift removal at low pressure drop and pairs well with CF1900SS, a stainless steel film fill offering.

Spectra

Spectra Drift Eliminators are site-assembled heavy-duty drift eliminators frequently used as replacement parts in dirty water applications or for long span applications, such as counterflow natural draft cooling towers. Constructed from double-walled extruded blades and injection molded spacers, Spectra drift eliminators are a rugged option for the most demanding applications.
